about

"The Poorest Poet" was written almost entirely on a walk in the woods in 1993, then took 25 years to finish. This seemingly simple country waltz about appreciating the love you have just needed to percolate for a few decades, apparently.

Tom Ingersoll and Robby Baier share writing credits. Special thanks are given to Jim Reynolds and Matt Mervis, who helped develop the song. Thom Whaley suggested the B minor chord in the chorus.

lyrics

Of all the poets, I'm the poorest
Just a twig in the forest
I’m a drop in the ocean
Like all the lovers in the land
A stone not worth countin'
Rollin' down a mountain
Down to that shoreline where I’m
Just a grain of sand

There's a thousand ways how things could be
But ain't it crazy how you and me
We're out here doin' fine
A little house, a cup of tea
It's all just how it is supposed to be
You can put your hand in mine
And I can love you without even tryin’

You're the lighthouse for my sailor
The key for my jailor
My sweet and lovely Tupelo
By the flowers on the hill
And I'm a radio flyer
Your handyman for hire
I’m that candle always burnin’
Sittin’ on your window sill

There's a thousand ways how things could be
Ain't it crazy how you and me
We're out here doin' fine
A little house, a cup of tea
It's all just how it is supposed to be
You can put your hand in mine
And I can love you without even trying

So let us hold each other tight
Watch the stars come out tonight
Try to figure out this life
On a blanket just for two
Let it be just me and you

There's a thousand ways how things could be
But ain't it crazy how you and me
We're out here doin' fine
A little house, a cup of tea
And it's all just how it is supposed to be
You can put your hands in mine
And I can love you without even tryin’
I can love you without even tryin’
I can love you without even tryin’
